The world’s richest women are as follows:
1. Christy Walton - worth $20 billion. She was the wife of John Walton, who is the son of Walmart founder Sam Walton. John Walton died in a plane crash in 2005, and she received his fortune.
2. Alice Walton - worth $19.5 billion. She is the daughter of the previously-mentioned Walmart founder, Sam Walton.
3. Liliane Bettencourt - worth $15 billion. She is one of the principal shareholders of L’Oreal, the world’s largest cosmetics and beauty company.
4. Susanne Klatten - worth $12 billion. When her father died, she received a 50.1% stake in Altana, a pharmaceutical and chemicals manufacturer, as well as a 12.5% stake in BMW. She is the richest woman in Germany.
Neither J.K. Rowling nor Oprah Winfrey made the top 20 of this list. Neither did former eBay chief Margaret Whitman. It’s important to note that all of these women pretty much inherited their income. Thus, in my mind, I give Rowling and Winfrey far more credit than any of these women. Incidentally, Angelina Jolie replaced Oprah Winfrey as the “world’s most powerful celebrity”.
